Distinguished Speakers Series: Celinda Lake

June 15, 2009

On Monday, June 15th, at Noon, DCNet’s Distinguished Speakers Series will host speaker Celinda Lake, President of Lake Research Partners (http://www.lakeresearch.com). Ms. Lake is one of the country’s preeminent Democratic strategists, conducting polling on behalf of a wide range of federal and state elected officials, as well as organized labor and issue advocacy groups. She has won widespread acclaim for her successful campaign efforts to elect female Democrats to all levels of political office, as well as her groundbreaking findings on ways to promote a public health insurance alternative.

Ms. Lake will discuss her work to assemble and distribute data regarding the most effective word choices used to promote a variety of policy initiatives. By relying on hard data about the words that are proven to resonate with constituents, Democratic communicators can make the most effective choices to create powerful arguments to incorporate into their messages. There will be time for questions so come prepared to ask about how polling works and how you can use the results in your busy press operations.

Communications professionals often decide between competing message frames to persuade a listener or convey a point of view. When making these decisions, quantitative data can inform our choice of the most effective message. Large-scale polling operations like Gallup and Rasmussen, measure broad trends such as personal and policy approval ratings. But firms that work with focus groups can serve as invaluable resources by testing the effectiveness of specific words and frames. By making subtle changes in how we communicate, we can utilize proven language to maximize a positive response to our message and the Democratic policies we support.
