SUMMARY:DCNet Speakers Series: Eric Burns\, President of Media Matters
DESCRIPTION:As the message battles intensify across the country\, we all know how important it is to go on offense as well as to effectively fight back negative attacks and misinformation. On Friday\, September 24\, at 1 PM\, DCNet will hold a Distinguished Speakers series event with Media Matters President Eric Burns to hear his advice on how to deliver a smart offense and combat negative attacks. \nEric Burns is a progressive political communications\, management\, and strategy professional with more than a decade of experience in local\, state\, and national politics. He joined Media Matters in the Fall of 2006 as chief communications strategist and pioneered the creation of a cutting-edge communications center within the organization. \nBefore arriving at Media Matters\, Burns spent several years driving ethics reform and exposing Republican corruption in Congress. While serving as communications director for Congressman Chris Bell (D-TX)\, Burns conceived and directed the communications strategy for the historic 2004 ethics complaint filed against then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX). \nIn 2005\, Burns was tapped to serve as communications director for the then-ranking member of the House Rules Committee\, Louise Slaughter (D-NY). Continuing his aggressive coordination of communications strategy for the growing Democratic anti-corruption effort\, the subject quickly became one of two centerpiece issues in the historic 2006 elections. A former investment banker\, Burns holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and is the President of Media Matters for America. \nMedia Matters is a progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring\, analyzing\, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.

SUMMARY:DCNet Seminar: Crafting the Killer Quote
DESCRIPTION:A good turn of phrase is a powerful tool. Whether you’re out to win a media cycle\, catapult a career or maybe start a war — “For the Fairest” worked in ancient Greece\, while “The smoking gun could be a mushroom cloud” sold the public more recently — everything is possible when you get the language just right. That’s why from Greek times to the present day\, professional writers have catalogued\, traded and sometimes jealously guarded their favorite tricks for coming up with a killer line that settles debate and ignites action. \nThis DCNet seminar will present a selection of favorite recipes for turning an interesting point into an unforgettable quote: from old favorites like the anecdote\, the visual analogy and the difference\, to newer additions to the canon like the reality check\, re-centering and the two roads. \nThe session will be led by John Neffinger of KNP Communications\, presentation coach and speechwriter for dozens of candidates for and Members of Congress\, many leaders of progressive civic organizations\, and hundreds of corporate executives. John serves with Dr. Drew Westen as co-head-trainer of Media Matters for America’s Progressive Talent Initiative media training program\, from which this content is drawn. John has been featured discussing political communication on The CBS Evening News\, Hardball with Chris Mathews\, Fox News and NPR\, as well as in The Washington Post\, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

In that role\, she has provided a critical check on the U.S. Department of the Treasury and has been a leading advocate for accountability and transparency. She is currently the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School where she teaches contract law\, bankruptcy\, and commercial law.
