SUMMARY:DCNet Speakers Series: Eric Burns\, President of Media Matters
DESCRIPTION:As the message battles intensify across the country\, we all know how important it is to go on offense as well as to effectively fight back negative attacks and misinformation. On Friday\, September 24\, at 1 PM\, DCNet will hold a Distinguished Speakers series event with Media Matters President Eric Burns to hear his advice on how to deliver a smart offense and combat negative attacks. \nEric Burns is a progressive political communications\, management\, and strategy professional with more than a decade of experience in local\, state\, and national politics. He joined Media Matters in the Fall of 2006 as chief communications strategist and pioneered the creation of a cutting-edge communications center within the organization. \nBefore arriving at Media Matters\, Burns spent several years driving ethics reform and exposing Republican corruption in Congress. While serving as communications director for Congressman Chris Bell (D-TX)\, Burns conceived and directed the communications strategy for the historic 2004 ethics complaint filed against then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX). \nIn 2005\, Burns was tapped to serve as communications director for the then-ranking member of the House Rules Committee\, Louise Slaughter (D-NY). Continuing his aggressive coordination of communications strategy for the growing Democratic anti-corruption effort\, the subject quickly became one of two centerpiece issues in the historic 2006 elections. A former investment banker\, Burns holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and is the President of Media Matters for America. \nMedia Matters is a progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring\, analyzing\, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.

SUMMARY:DCNet Seminar: Crafting the Killer Quote
DESCRIPTION:A good turn of phrase is a powerful tool. Whether you’re out to win a media cycle\, catapult a career or maybe start a war — “For the Fairest” worked in ancient Greece\, while “The smoking gun could be a mushroom cloud” sold the public more recently — everything is possible when you get the language just right. That’s why from Greek times to the present day\, professional writers have catalogued\, traded and sometimes jealously guarded their favorite tricks for coming up with a killer line that settles debate and ignites action. \nThis DCNet seminar will present a selection of favorite recipes for turning an interesting point into an unforgettable quote: from old favorites like the anecdote\, the visual analogy and the difference\, to newer additions to the canon like the reality check\, re-centering and the two roads. \nThe session will be led by John Neffinger of KNP Communications\, presentation coach and speechwriter for dozens of candidates for and Members of Congress\, many leaders of progressive civic organizations\, and hundreds of corporate executives. John serves with Dr. Drew Westen as co-head-trainer of Media Matters for America’s Progressive Talent Initiative media training program\, from which this content is drawn. John has been featured discussing political communication on The CBS Evening News\, Hardball with Chris Mathews\, Fox News and NPR\, as well as in The Washington Post\, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

SUMMARY:Winning Messages on the Economy with Elizabeth Warren
DESCRIPTION:DCNet Speakers Series\nWednesday\, April 14\, 2010We all know what an important issue the economy will be now that our health care reform win is behind us and the 2010 midterm elections lie ahead. We need to make sure what we are doing here in Congress to spur economic growth and create jobs is conveyed to the public back home and a hard hitting message is the key to doing that. \nOn Wednesday\, April 14\, at 11 AM\, DCNet will hold a Speakers Series with Professor Elizabeth Warren about winning messages on the economy. \nFor the past three decades\, Elizabeth Warren has devoted much of her time to studying the economics of middle class families. In the wake of the 2008-9 financial crisis\, she became the chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel created to investigate TARP. In that role\, she has provided a critical check on the U.S. Department of the Treasury and has been a leading advocate for accountability and transparency. She is currently the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School where she teaches contract law\, bankruptcy\, and commercial law.

SUMMARY:Management Training Series\, Part 2: Motivating Others
DESCRIPTION:Managing. It’s a key ingredient to leading a successful office. And yet\, unlike learning how to pitch a reporter\, write a bill or organize an event\, most of us have never been taught how to delegate\, manage or lead a team. \nThis Friday at 11 am\, DCNet will host the second in a three-part series of management and leadership training sessions led by the Partnership for Public Service (http://www.ourpublicservice.org)\, an organization dedicated to helping the federal government become more efficient (in part by teaching us how to manage). Come join us to help learn how to navigate the often mystifying world of being an effective manager. These will be interactive discussions\, so we will give preference to participants have management experience (supervising at least one or more full-time staffers). \nSpace is limited and RSVP encouraged; participants interested in the full series are encouraged to RSVP for the remaining two workshops ASAP to secure your spot. Please bring your IDs as they will be checked at the door. \n——– \nSession 2: Motivating Others \nThe most successful organizations have highly-engaged and motivated employees. The Partnership’s Best Places to Work in the Federal Government research dispels the common misperception that money is the primary driver of motivation\, revealing that it is the quality of one’s leaders and managers that has the greatest impact on engagement. \nIn this session\, we will employ a brainstorming approach to help participants identify actionable techniques for motivating their peers and/or employees. \nDate: October 9\, 2009 at 11am. \n——– \nUPCOMING Session 3: Coaching for Success and Improvement \nAs difficult as it is to have an honest performance discussion with a poor-performer\, it is necessary for the success of your office and for the well-being of the other members of your team. Engaging high-performing staff is an equally daunting task. \nIn this session\, we will provide an actionable framework for setting clear expectations\, providing concrete feedback and working with employees to further their career goals (i.e.\, coaching). As part of the session\, we will provide each participant with a discussion tool for use when delivering feedback and providing coaching to their employees. \nDate: November 20\, 2009 at 11am.

SUMMARY:Registration Deadline: Fall 2009 Mentoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: Wednesday\, September 30\, 2009. \nThe Democratic Communicators Network is launching the Fall 2009 Mentoring Program for House and Senate communications staffers. \nIf you are new to the Hill and would like to take part in the program\, we welcome your participation. If you have participated in the program as a mentee and would like to continue with a new mentor\, or if you would like to now serve as a mentor\, we encourage you to sign up again. If you have worked in communications on the Hill for two or more years\, please consider volunteering to serve as a mentor to new staff. \nFor those that are unfamiliar with the program\, the Democratic Communicators Network (www.democraticcommunicators.net) mentoring program was created to help new communications staff become familiar with resources\, learn about additional tools of the trade\, and make connections with senior communications staff on the Hill. Essentially\, the mentoring program provides a link to pass knowledge from more experienced communications directors to new press staffers. \nAfter four successful classes of graduates\, (the Spring 09 session had over 110 mentees and mentors from House and Senate offices!) we are ready to move forward with the next class of participants. Please note that previous mentors are welcome (and encouraged) to participate again. \nAbout the Program: \nThis program is a three month commitment. Below is a link to a short survey for you to complete. Mentees will be matched to mentors based on the answers you provide us. \nEach month focuses on a central discussion theme with questions/exercises that the pairs are encouraged to review. These cover topics like your media plan\, press events\, and even advice on office politics. These topics are just suggestions to get discussion started; often pairs end up talking about a variety of other issues. You and your partner are asked to meet periodically throughout the month (approximately 4 hours a month is expected) and the DCNet team will follow up with each of you throughout the program to see how things are going.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speakers Series: Celinda Lake
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 15th\, at Noon\, DCNet’s Distinguished Speakers Series will host speaker Celinda Lake\, President of Lake Research Partners (http://www.lakeresearch.com). Ms. Lake is one of the country’s preeminent Democratic strategists\, conducting polling on behalf of a wide range of federal and state elected officials\, as well as organized labor and issue advocacy groups. She has won widespread acclaim for her successful campaign efforts to elect female Democrats to all levels of political office\, as well as her groundbreaking findings on ways to promote a public health insurance alternative. \nMs. Lake will discuss her work to assemble and distribute data regarding the most effective word choices used to promote a variety of policy initiatives. By relying on hard data about the words that are proven to resonate with constituents\, Democratic communicators can make the most effective choices to create powerful arguments to incorporate into their messages. There will be time for questions so come prepared to ask about how polling works and how you can use the results in your busy press operations. \nCommunications professionals often decide between competing message frames to persuade a listener or convey a point of view. When making these decisions\, quantitative data can inform our choice of the most effective message. Large-scale polling operations like Gallup and Rasmussen\, measure broad trends such as personal and policy approval ratings. But firms that work with focus groups can serve as invaluable resources by testing the effectiveness of specific words and frames. By making subtle changes in how we communicate\, we can utilize proven language to maximize a positive response to our message and the Democratic policies we support. \nWhat: DCNet Distinguished Speakers Series: Celinda Lake\, President of Lake Research Partners\nWhen: Monday\, June 15th\, Noon-1 pm
