This off-the-record conversation will provide House and Senate press staff an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about communications work at a federal agency in general\, as well as the latest message strategies on strengthening the housing sector in particular. \nThe event is part of DCNet’s effort to bring together communicators from Congress and federal agencies to network and share ideas. \nHUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes: utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; and build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination. \nSpecializing in crisis communication and management\, Melanie N. Roussell has spent nearly seven years inside the Beltway crafting messages and developing communication strategies for political principles. She has served as Communications Director for former Rep. William Jefferson and the House Judiciary Committee. In 2008\, Roussell was named Southern Regional Communications Director for the Barack Obama campaign and then worked on the Presidential Inaugural Committee as a spokesperson. She was named Press Secretary for HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan in February 2009.

We need to make sure what we are doing here in Congress to spur economic growth and create jobs is conveyed to the public back home and a hard hitting message is the key to doing that. \nOn Wednesday\, April 14\, at 11 AM\, DCNet will hold a Speakers Series with Professor Elizabeth Warren about winning messages on the economy. \nFor the past three decades\, Elizabeth Warren has devoted much of her time to studying the economics of middle class families. In the wake of the 2008-9 financial crisis\, she became the chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel created to investigate TARP. In that role\, she has provided a critical check on the U.S. Department of the Treasury and has been a leading advocate for accountability and transparency. She is currently the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School where she teaches contract law\, bankruptcy\, and commercial law.

DESCRIPTION: On Monday\, December 7\, at 11 AM\, DCNet will host guest speaker Chad Pergram\, Senior Producer\, FOX News\, who will talk about his work as a reporter on the Hill and how to get your boss news coverage. \nChad Pergram covers Congress for FOX News. He joined FOX in 2007 after stints with Capitol News Connection with PRI\, NPR and C-SPAN. In March 2006\, the Radio/Television Correspondents Association saluted him with the Joan S. Barone Award for Excellence in National Affairs/Public Policy Broadcast Journalism\, the most-prestigious honor in Washington for electronic news coverage of Capitol Hill. Pergram is the youngest recipient of the award and was the first radio reporter to be honored in 12 years. He also won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence In Reporting in March 2007 for his reporting on outgoing House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX). In 2009\, Washingtonian magazine named Pergram as one of the 50 best journalists in Washington. “A star on and off the air\, Pergram has the respect of his Capitol Hill peers. Not an easy group to please\,” Washingtonian wrote. Pergram has served as an RCTA Executive Committee member for the past three years and is a board member of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. He’s a native of Jacksonburg\, OH\, the smallest incorporated village in the state (population: 52). DESCRIPTION:Managing. It’s a key ingredient to leading a successful office. And yet\, unlike learning how to pitch a reporter\, write a bill or organize an event\, most of us have never been taught how to delegate\, manage or lead a team. \nThis Friday at 11 am\, DCNet will host the second in a three-part series of management and leadership training sessions led by the Partnership for Public Service (http://www.ourpublicservice.org)\, an organization dedicated to helping the federal government become more efficient (in part by teaching us how to manage). Come join us to help learn how to navigate the often mystifying world of being an effective manager. These will be interactive discussions\, so we will give preference to participants have management experience (supervising at least one or more full-time staffers). \nSpace is limited and RSVP encouraged; participants interested in the full series are encouraged to RSVP for the remaining two workshops ASAP to secure your spot. Please bring your IDs as they will be checked at the door. \n——– \nSession 2: Motivating Others \nThe most successful organizations have highly-engaged and motivated employees. The Partnership’s Best Places to Work in the Federal Government research dispels the common misperception that money is the primary driver of motivation\, revealing that it is the quality of one’s leaders and managers that has the greatest impact on engagement. \nIn this session\, we will employ a brainstorming approach to help participants identify actionable techniques for motivating their peers and/or employees. \nDate: October 9\, 2009 at 11am. \n——– \nUPCOMING Session 3: Coaching for Success and Improvement \nAs difficult as it is to have an honest performance discussion with a poor-performer\, it is necessary for the success of your office and for the well-being of the other members of your team. Engaging high-performing staff is an equally daunting task. \nIn this session\, we will provide an actionable framework for setting clear expectations\, providing concrete feedback and working with employees to further their career goals (i.e.\, coaching). DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: Wednesday\, September 30\, 2009.  \nThe Democratic Communicators Network is launching the Fall 2009 Mentoring Program for House and Senate communications staffers. \nIf you are new to the Hill and would like to take part in the program\, we welcome your participation. If you have participated in the program as a mentee and would like to continue with a new mentor\, or if you would like to now serve as a mentor\, we encourage you to sign up again. If you have worked in communications on the Hill for two or more years\, please consider volunteering to serve as a mentor to new staff. \nFor those that are unfamiliar with the program\, the Democratic Communicators Network (www.democraticcommunicators.net) mentoring program was created to help new communications staff become familiar with resources\, learn about additional tools of the trade\, and make connections with senior communications staff on the Hill. Essentially\, the mentoring program provides a link to pass knowledge from more experienced communications directors to new press staffers. \nAfter four successful classes of graduates\, (the Spring 09 session had over 110 mentees and mentors from House and Senate offices!) we are ready to move forward with the next class of participants. Please note that previous mentors are welcome (and encouraged) to participate again. \nAbout the Program:  \nThis program is a three month commitment. Below is a link to a short survey for you to complete. Mentees will be matched to mentors based on the answers you provide us. \nEach month focuses on a central discussion theme with questions/exercises that the pairs are encouraged to review. These cover topics like your media plan\, press events\, and even advice on office politics. These topics are just suggestions to get discussion started; often pairs end up talking about a variety of other issues. You and your partner are asked to meet periodically throughout the month (approximately 4 hours a month is expected) and the DCNet team will follow up with each of you throughout the program to see how things are going.

But firms that work with focus groups can serve as invaluable resources by testing the effectiveness of specific words and frames. That’s why the Democratic Communicators Network (www.democraticcommunicators.net) created a mentoring program to help new press secretaries become familiar with resources\, learn about additional tools of the trade\, and make connections with senior press staff on the Hill. Essentially\, the mentoring program provides a link to pass knowledge from more experienced communications directors to new press staffers. \nAfter three successful classes of graduates\, we are ready to move forward with the next class of participants. Please note that previous mentors are welcome (and encouraged) to participate again. \nAbout the Program: \nThis program is a three month commitment. After you have expressed your interest with this following email\, I will send you a short survey. Based on those answers\, mentees will be matched to mentors. \nEach month focuses on a central discussion theme with questions/exercises that the pairs are advised to review. These cover topics like your media plan\, press events\, and even advice on office politics.
